Three Things to Do When Downsizing from a House to an Apartment

Moving, in general, is challenging, but even more so when you move to a smaller home. After all, it’s easier to spread out your belongings over a wide area than to try and make them all fit in a small living space. A lot will change; that is inevitable. From the things you have at home to your buying habits, your new place will have a significant impact on your life moving forward.

It all boils down to how well you adapt to your new space. As a trusted moving company in Irvine, California, Monster Moving and Storage has witnessed many clients go through these difficulties. Allow us to share what we’ve observed our clients do to transition smoothly from their old house to a new apartment.

Downsize (Maybe Everything)

Apartments offer a much smaller living space, and this means you need to scale things down, both in size and number.

To maximize floor space, examine your furniture. Are the dimensions of your bed too large for the single bedroom? Is your sectional going to fit in your new living room? Do you need an eight-seater dining table? Maybe you can make do with a smaller one. After all, it’s best to choose the furniture pieces that fit and don’t make your rooms feel cramped.

Also, take inventory of your possessions. You might have three or four extra pieces of an item that you don’t use often. It doesn’t matter that they’re small; they will still take up precious storage space. So, if you’re switching from a sectional to a loveseat, you don’t need to take all ten throw pillows with you. Two or three will do.

Finally, trim down your wardrobe. Get rid of the items you never wear, especially the shoes, as they take up more space than you probably realize.

Learn to Let Go

In rethinking your furniture, household items, and clothes, you may have to let go of some of them. Give them away to your neighbors and friends. Some of them might find good uses for the things you no longer have room for in your new apartment. You can also donate the stuff you’re leaving behind to charity.

Many of our clients took the idea of “starting fresh” to heart and sold most of their possessions in a garage sale or on eBay, Craigslist, and Facebook. Do the same if you want to earn extra cash.

Whether you give away your belongings or sell them, you’ll reduce the number of items you need to pack. In case you’re pressed for time, however, and can’t take care of the packing on your own, Monster Moving and Storage can do it for you.

Keep Only What’s Important

We know there are some things you simply can’t part with. So, keep the important ones, and if they don’t fit into your new home, put them in storage.

For instance, we’ve served older couples who held on to bassinets and cribs because they wanted to hand them over to their children for when they start their own families. Others have extensive collections for which they’ve spent a lot of good money. Most have seasonal items, like Christmas decorations and sports equipment, that take up storage space for the better part of the year.

To keep their possessions safe and accessible, our clients keep them in our storage facility.

Moving from a home to an apartment can be a daunting task, but you can overcome them by adopting a positive attitude and embracing minimalism. If you need further assistance, Monster Moving and Storage is just a call away.
