Decluttering is one of the best ways to save time and boxing space when you're boxing up your belongings before your local moving company arrives. The last thing you want to do is bring items you don't use or even like onto your next adventure.
But how do you narrow down which items you don't need and which ones are best to keep? To help you out, here are some of the most common items that people bring with them to their new home that really ought to be left behind.
- Items that have stayed in storage. Approximately 35.5 million Americans move every year. If you have something that's stayed in your old moving boxes that hasn't been out to see the sun in over a year (and not because it's seasonal), it's better to donate it than to bring it with you.
- Mugs. Mugs are one of those cups that tend to accumulate in your cabinet. You may have a set of matching mugs from your dish set along with a few sentimental mugs from family vacations or holidays. But if your dish cabinet is difficult to stock because of how many cups you have, it may be a good idea to pare down how many mugs you have and donate them before you move.
- Old and expired food. When you're going through your pantry to pack away your pasta boxes and canned vegetables, make sure you're taking a good look at the expiration dates on these items. Don't assume everything in your cupboards is salvageable. Another way to save room in your packing boxes is to check out your spice rack. While spices don't expire, they're not as flavorful when they age. Consider tossing your old spices and replacing them with new ones if you really do need them.
- The toilet bowl brush. Some cleaning products are good to bring with you to your new home including brooms, clean sponges, and brushes. But toilet bowl brushes are brimming with germs. Those germs will only end up on your other cleaning items or in the box when you're moving it. Instead, throw your old toilet brush away and start with a new one at your new home.
