18 Jul Moving This Summer? Beat the Heat With These 3 Tips
Summer is one of the busiest times for moving — with college kids ending the spring semester, apartment leases ending, and people wanting to move after a long winter, moving companies are always busy during the summer. And while making the move to a new home is stressful and overwhelming any time of the year, it’s especially challenging in the summer heat. So if you’re relocating this summer, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Start early in the morning: If possible, you’re going to want to start as early in the morning as you can. Hopefully, all of your belongings should be packed up and ready to go before the movers arrive. This way, you and your movers can load as much as possible before the mid-day heat hits. You want to get as much done in the morning as you can so you can avoid being out during the hottest time of the day. And when it comes to unloading, try to streamline the process as best as possible to get out of the heat quickly. And make sure you take a look at the forecast for your moving day so you can be prepared for wind or rain.
Be mindful of your belongings: When you’re packing your belongings, it’s important to take note of items that won’t do well in the heat — electronics, toiletries, candles, and instruments are just a few of the many items that you need to be mindful of in high temperatures. If possible, let your local movers know ahead of time which boxes contain items that may melt or become damaged in the heat. Or if you can, consider putting these boxes in the car with you where you can ensure they stay cool.
Keep yourself and movers cool: It’s not just your belongings that you have to worry about in the heat. You need to ensure you and your movers are staying cool, too. First, wear lightweight clothing that will help keep you cool. Second, always have water on hand and make sure everyone is staying hydrated. You can also keep mini fans or even towels soaked in cold water on hand to keep everyone cool. All in all, do whatever you can to take care of yourself while working in the heat.
With 11% of the U.S. population having moved in 2017 alone, millions of people move every year. But if this is the first time you’re moving in the summer, make sure to keep these simple tips in mind to help beat the heat.
