29 May Before Moving Day: 5 Tasks to Tackle
When it comes time to move, it’s not enough to gather a few boxes and throw your belongings in haphazardly. If you want a successful moving experience, you need to plan and prepare as much as possible. So to help you out, we’ve compiled a short list of a few important tasks that should be done well ahead of your moving date.
Find a Moving Company
Whether you’re moving near or far, you should always invest in the help of local movers. And with the U.S. moving industry employing around 122,000 people in 2018 alone, you should have no trouble finding an experienced and reputable local moving company. It’s important to start looking into moving companies early on so you can gather rates, book a desirable date, and confirm all of the important details.
Update Your Address
It’s also important to update your address for your mail, bills, and subscriptions. It’s best to do this about a month before you move to ensure it gets changed on time. You should also contact your utility companies to update your address and information — this way, everything can be set up when you arrive at your new home.
Take Inventory of Your Belongings
While people may think that packing and labeling boxes is enough, you may want to take the extra time to take inventory of your belongings. As you’re packing, write down which items are going in which box. In doing this, you can easily find exactly what you’re looking for instead of having to sort through five different “kitchen” boxes to find your cups.
Finalize Travel Details
A few weeks before the move, it’s important to make sure your travel plans are finalized. You should book flights, confirm shipping dates, plan your driving route, or whatever else you need to do to ensure you’ll be able to get to your new house. Confirm these details with whoever you’ll be traveling with as well as your local movers.
Clean Your Old House
Whether you’re in a house or an apartment, it’s always a good idea to do a little cleaning before you move. This is especially important if you’re selling your home and will have prospective buyers looking at it or if you’re renting and need your security deposit back. So once most of your stuff is packed, do some light cleaning and leave your home in good condition when you leave.
Moving can be overwhelming and stressful, but if you prepare properly and work with experienced local movers, it won’t be so bad. So make sure to add these important tasks to your “to do” list before moving day.
